The Casa de Mateus was built in the first half of the 18th century by Antonio Jose Botelho Mourao, 3rd Morgado de Mateus. It is a National Monument and was designed by famous italian architect Nicolau Nasoni. In the lake facing the house we can see a wonderful sculpture of a sleeping woman by the great portuguese sculptor Joao Cutileiro.
